The most useful first message says what should change in the work, not which technology you think you need. We can settle the rest.

What helps

• What the business does, and who will be using this
• What works badly today, or takes too long
• Whether there is a deadline, and where it comes from
• Whether something already exists, or we are starting from nothing

You do not need a finished specification. If you have not got one, the first conversation is about exactly that.

What to expect

I answer within a day. If the project suits me, you get a scope, a date and a price before anything gets built. If it does not suit me, I say so straight away — and if I know somebody better for the job, I pass on their details.
